Two weeks into the SCCEI program, I thought I had China figured out. It looked like a place where opportunity had no real ceiling. We'd toured company after company, walked through cities that seemed to rebuild themselves overnight, and heard growth numbers that would have sounded exaggerated back home. Then we visited Dandelion, a school built for the children of migrant workers, and saw the other side of that same economy, the one with a ceiling after all.
Talking with the students, it was clear how much they wanted for themselves. A few could name Stanford and schools like it, the way any ambitious teenager might. But because of China's hukou system, these were children whose families had left rural provinces for Beijing, and technically they weren't even supposed to be enrolled in a city public school. Dandelion was the rural-urban divide we'd only read about, now with actual names and faces attached to it. These were kids whose families had given up everything to make the move, and who were still, structurally, on the outside of the city they'd moved to. Talking with the school's leaders afterward, I learned something that stuck with me. Dandelion itself is genuinely well run. But even its best students often struggle once they leave, and hearing that made it clear a school this good still can't bridge the divide on its own.
The same day, Xiaomi's electric vehicle factory showed the opposite extreme. The company had spent about a decade building an operating system that quietly ties together phones and appliances, so building a car wasn't really a pivot, but it was still a massive undertaking, a phone company betting billions on an entirely new industry. Chinese consumers bought in: the car sold out for months, with wait times at one point stretching past nine months. As a student concentrating in human-computer interaction, I'd already noticed how seamlessly apps like WeChat and Alipay tie every part of daily life into one system, one app, one QR code, everything connected. Xiaomi's factory ran on that same instinct, just at industrial scale instead of app scale: connect everything to one ecosystem, then let each new product plug into it. Standing on the floor, opportunity looked limitless again.
That contrast is the real shift I came home with. Growing up in the US, I'd absorbed one story about China's economy, a country growing fast on the back of cheap labor and sheer scale. This trip showed me another story, one of an economy innovating at lightning speed while still working through very real growing pains. China isn't one thing or the other. It's both at once, depending on who you ask or where you happen to be standing, and Dandelion and Xiaomi prove it. A migrant family's child is still locked out of an ordinary school while an engineer builds a car company from nothing in three years, both inside the same city.
I want to be a tech entrepreneur, and the lesson here isn't simply to move fast, or simply to think long-term. It means paying attention to both the ambition and the limits at the same time. Xiaomi spent a decade building toward something before making an aggressive bet once the moment came, and that instinct is worth taking with me. Dandelion taught me the opposite lesson: growth on paper doesn't mean growth for everyone near it. If I ever build something that scales the way Xiaomi has, I want to know who's being left out when it does.
I feel fortunate to have seen both sides of this within the same two weeks, the classroom and the factory floor. Thank you for building a program that let me leave with the more nuanced, truer picture, instead of the simple one I arrived with.
