Filming Interactions to Nurture Development (FIND) in Rural China
Filming Interactions to Nurture Development in Rural China
Project Overview
A child’s first years lay a critical foundation for their future. Yet across rural China, countless young children experience developmental delays in language, learning, and social skills that put them at a disadvantage before they even enter a classroom. Without early support, these delays often snowball into long-term academic struggles and fewer opportunities later in life. And while the need for effective interventions is undeniable, most rural families still have no access to the proven support systems that could change their family’s lives.
About FIND
The Filming Interactions to Nurture Development (FIND) program was created to meet this critical need, offering a proven solution for resource-limited settings that builds on caregivers' natural strengths. By filming natural caregiver-child interactions at home, FIND documents authentic moments of developmentally supportive parenting. Trained coaches then use these video examples in just 10 sessions to highlight and reinforce positive interactions, focusing exclusively on what's already working rather than introducing new techniques. This practical design, with its brief duration and positive reinforcement model, makes FIND particularly valuable for rural communities, where it can be easily implemented alongside existing services.
Our Work in China
Our team is currently adapting and evaluating FIND for rural Chinese villages, modifying and tailoring the curriculum to local contexts while preserving its strength-based approach. Through this three-year initiative, we'll partner with 700 families across 100 villages to evaluate how FIND improves children's development across language, cognitive, and social-emotional domains while simultaneously strengthening caregivers' skills and confidence. If proven effective in rural China, FIND could be expanded and integrated into the country’s national parenting initiatives, potentially reaching millions of families who need it most.
